Our innovative applied science program was developed in-house to provide a rigorous, practical exploration of science-related careers and as a culmination of our students' journey in science. They begin the year delving into emergency medicine, which connects students’ extensive knowledge of body systems from seventh grade science to the appropriate response to emergency situations. Students analyze a patient to determine the injury and study wound management, shock, fractures, and heat-induced ailments. The second unit is a lab-driven study of chemistry, culminating in students developing, implementing, and documenting their own experiment. Students conclude the year with an architecture unit, where professional architects lead classes and guide students through the design and development of a model of a building. In culmination, students present their designs to a panel of architects. Throughout the year, eighth graders work in our hydroponics lab, harvesting herbs and vegetables as part of their study of sustainability and urban farming.
