Recently, we shared news about where our older alumni are headed to college and Drew's journey to Spelman, the #1 HBCU in the country! Today, we want to highlight the high school selections of our newest class of graduates and share a window into another thoughtful approach to a key transition moment.
Kaytin wasn’t initially sold on the idea of going to an all-girls secondary school when she applied to Westover, but her feelings quickly changed after a visit. “I felt really comfortable,” she says. “The students and teachers there are close, and it’s a very supportive community – just like at Harlem Academy.”
Kaytin was also intrigued by Westover’s academic offerings, especially in STEM. “I’m interested in medicine and science, and I want to explore them more. I love biology, immunology, neurology, psychology – all the ‘-ologys.’ It’s so fascinating to me.” She has her sights set on Westover’s Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program, which allows students to delve deeply into STEM courses. “They have a lot of classes that I want to try.”
Although Westover’s curriculum will be challenging, Kaytin is confident she’ll do well. “We did advanced work at Harlem Academy, so I feel ready,” she says, pointing to science research papers, English and history essays, literary analysis, and Algebra 1 as just a few examples. “All of it really prepared me for what’s to come. I know there’s going to be a lot of work in high school, so I have to stay determined and ask my teachers for help if I need it,” she says, citing our School Creed.
When she’s not hitting the books, Kaytin plans to take part in various sports and clubs, including volleyball, softball, tennis, and the Multiethnic and Multiracial Association. “I want to join the dance club too because I’ve been doing ballet for nine years,” she says. “And I’m excited to apply for the study abroad program that’s open to ninth graders. It’s important to try different activities because it ensures that you’re well-rounded, and that’s what I want to be.”
Harlem Academy is an independent school (grades K-8) that drives equity of opportunity for promising students, guiding them to thrive at the highest academic levels and one day make a mark on the world.
