Position Overview:
Harlem Academy seeks a dynamic and passionate Sports and Fitness Teacher to work with students in grades K-8. This position is split 40/60 between the primary/elementary school and the middle school, with responsibilities in both divisions and management of the after-school sports program for middle school students. The teacher will also serve as a middle school advisor, mentoring and advising students closely.
Primary Responsibilities:
Develop engaging, fun, and effective physical education lessons focusing on health, wellness, fitness, and personal growth.
Foster a positive learning environment where all students feel motivated and encouraged to participate, regardless of skill level.
Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of a diverse student body, ensuring that all students experience success.
Lead after-school athletic programs for middle school students, promoting teamwork, sportsmanship, and physical fitness.
Serve as a Middle School advisor, providing guidance and mentorship to a small group of students, supporting their academic and social development.
Collaborate with fellow educators and staff to integrate health and wellness across the curriculum and school culture.
Regularly communicate with students, parents, and colleagues to ensure a holistic approach to student development.
Qualifications:
BA/BS degree required; BA/BS in Physical Education, Sports Science, or a related field preferred.
At least one year of experience teaching physical education, ideally with elementary and middle school students.
Strong knowledge of P.E. content, early learners, and best practices in teaching health and wellness.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
Passion for working with children, particularly in an underserved community, and the ability to inspire and engage students in fitness and athletic activities.
Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team of educators and support staff.
